Bassem Andrawes holds a B.Sc. in Civil Engineering from Ain Shams University (1996), M.Sc. in Civil Engineering (Structures) from Iowa State University (2001), and Ph.D. in Civil Engineering (Structures) from Georgia Institute of Technology (2005). He has been on the faculty of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Illinois since the fall of 2006. Prior to joining the University of Illinois, Professor Andrawes worked as a Postdoctoral Scholar at the University of California Irvine and a Design Engineer at Englekirk Partners Consulting Structural Engineers in Santa Ana, CA.

He teaches graduate and undergraduate courses related to the structural behavior and design of concrete such as reinforced concrete design, prestressed concrete design, and design of structural systems

Professor Andrawes research interests are primarily in the areas of structural dynamics, earthquake engineering, bridge engineering, seismic retrofit of structures, application of innovative and smart materials in structures subjected to natural and man-made hazards, constitutive modeling of shape memory alloys under extreme dynamic loads, passive and active control of structures, large-scale experimental testing, and nonlinear finite element methods.

Professor Andrawes is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI), the George E. Brown, Jr. Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (NEES) Consortium, the Transportation Research Board (TRB), and the Consortium of Universities for Research in Earthquake Engineering (CUREE).
