William J. Hall holds a B.S. (University of Kansas 1948), M.S. (University of Illinois 1951), and a Ph.D. (University of Illinois 1954), all in civil engineering; he also underwent Officer Training in the Kings Point U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. He has been on the faculty of the department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Illinois since 1954. During the years 1984-1991, her served as Head of the department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Illinois. In 1948-49 he was an engineer with the Sohio Pipeline Co.

At the Univ. of Illinois Dr. Hall was engaged in instruction and research, with a specialty in structural engineering and structural dynamics, and research emphasis on properties of steel materials, blast and shock, and earthquake engineering.

Dr. Hall is the author of more than 215 books, papers and major reports of national importance, copies of which reside in Grainger Engineering Library and Information Center.

Dr. Hall has had professional involvement with many large projects including the Trans-Alaska Pipeline, nuclear power plants, many agencies of government [for example, defense -- protective structures, missile systems, and nuclear materials], and with the National Research Council. He is an Honorary Member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, National Honor Member of Chi Epsilon, and a member of the National Academy of Engineering.
