Department Overview

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign was founded March 2, l868, under the Land Grant College Act signed by Abraham Lincoln. In 1870, the College of Engineering was established. In 1871, the Department of Civil Engineering was organized; and in 1872, four civil engineers were graduated.

Now, 125 years since our organization, the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is one of the largest, most comprehensive, and highly ranked departments of Civil Engineering in the country with approximately 700 undergraduates, 350 graduate students and a faculty of 50.

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is a large research university, and our civil engineering department performs $6,000,000 of research annually.
