Postdoctoral research associate position is available in the research area of Design for Sustainability in the Dept. of Industrial and Enterprise Systems Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) in the research group of Professor Harrison Kim. We are seeking qualified and motivated postdoctoral researcher to advance the sustainable design and manufacturing of complex products. The successful applicants will integrate life cycle costing (LCC) and life cycle assessment (LCA) in consideration of uncertainty and demonstrate the effectiveness of trade-off design approach for realistic product (re)manufacturing cases. Candidates with background in environmental science and engineering in addition to design methods will be preferred. The postdoc will be in Dr. Kim’s research group and will collaborate with a strong cohort of faculty, postdocs, and graduate students in the design research area at UIUC.

The duties of the postdocs will focus on modeling the process of environmental impact assessment and automating tradeoff in a user-friendly environment. In addition to day-to-day project execution, a target outcome the work is to create an open-access design tool for adoption by industry partners. Expertise in some of the following areas is desired: material processing, impact quantification of chemicals, SimaPro, Visual Basic, and Python.

Required qualifications:

A Ph.D. in mechanical engineering, environmental engineering, industrial systems engineering, or other relevant fields; Ability to work in a collaborative environment.

Strong candidates will also possess the following attributes:

Experience with environmental impact quantification at the process and material level; Experience with programming; Evidence of scientific impact of their Ph.D. (e.g., published papers).

Postdoc application review will begin on May 1, 2018. Start dates are flexible, and could range from June 1, 2018 to late summer 2018. Positions are available for one year; however, potential annual renewal is dependent on funding, progress made by the individual, and career goals of the individual (mentoring plans will be tailored to meet the individual’s goals).
