Arun Chaiseri wins Distinguished Alumnus Award

Arun Chaiseri, Professor Emeritus of Civil Engineering, Chulalongkorn University, and President of Arun Chaiseri Consulting Engineers Ltd. in Bangkok, Thailand, received a 2008 Distinguished Alumnus Award from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.  The award was presented February 7 at the annual Chicago Regional Dinner Meeting of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Alumni Association, held at the Union League Club of Chicago.

“For outstanding, long-term leadership and contributions to the development of civil/structural engineering practice and construction technology in Thailand, for extensive public service, and for commitment to mentoring youth in engineering.”

Chaiseri’s career has included serving on the engineering faculty of Chulalongkorn University from 1956 to 1978, when he retired as a professor.  In 1979 he established Arun Chaiseri Consulting Engineers Co. Ltd.  The company grew from its initial staff of seven to its current size of 260 employees and now boasts more than 1,000 projects in the structural design of buildings and civil works, as well as construction and project management.

Chaiseri’s contributions to the practice of engineering in Thailand are many.  He served as a member of the Committee of Building Control, Ministry of Interior (1984 to 2007) and was elected President of the Engineering Institute of Thailand under the King’s Patronage (1994 to 1995 and 1996 to 1997).  During his four-year term as Senator (1996 to 2000), he established the Council of Engineers, of which he was elected president (2000 to 2003).

His other honors include Honorary Doctorate degrees from both Chulalongkorn University (1991) and Naresuan University (1995).  He was named an ASEAN Outstanding Contributor to Concrete Technology by the American Concrete Institute (1994) and a Distinguished Honorary Fellow (2007) in CAFEO 25, the 25th Conference of ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organizations.

Chaiseri earned his Bachelor’s Honoured Degree in civil engineering from Chulalongkorn University (1956) and his master’s degree in civil engineering from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (1960).
