Robert W. Cusick wins Distinguished Alumnus Award

Robert W. Cusick, Executive Vice President and Director of Government and Commercial Services for Hanson Professional Services Inc. of Springfield, Ill., received a 2008 Distinguished Alumnus Award from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The award was presented February 7 at the annual Chicago Regional Dinner Meeting of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Alumni Association, held at the Union League Club of Chicago.

Cusick was cited, “For leadership in practice, for major contributions to the management of engineering projects, for strong contributions to the profession, and for extensive public service.”

Cusick joined Hanson in 1976, and by the age of 30 was instrumental in several complex projects, including underpinning work for subways in Atlanta, Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia; the design of post-tensioned and delta-frame bridges in Saudi Arabia, the design of coal silos in China; and remedial foundation work for the $4 billion Consumers Nuclear Power Plant in Michigan.  Since 1983, Cusick has served as program manager for the technical review of Kerr-McGee Chemical Corporation’s radioactive waste decommissioning project, the largest radioactive decommissioning project in the state of Illinois.  Most recently, he coordinated Hanson’s disaster relief and recovery services for the Federal Emergency Management Agency, totaling more than $10 million since 2004.

Cusick earned both his bachelor’s (1974) and master’s (1976) degrees from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
