"Global Change and Sustainable Development"
The concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere is
increasing rapidly, and severe cutbacks in emissions will be required to
stabilize the the atmosphere within the next 100
years. It is clear that the earth
will be warmer in coming decades, but there is still uncertainty about how
much warmer it will be. Coupled with
the issue of global warming is the pervasive problem of global poverty and
how to improve the lives of 1.1 billion people who do not have access to
safe drinking water and 2.4 billion who do not have adequate sanitation. The solutions to these problems are interrelated,
and this lecture will explore methods to transition from the fossil fuel age to a more sustainable
future.
