Welcome to our web site.

As the Head of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, I would like to take this opportunity to share with you what I consider to be some of the Department's significant highlights and features. This Department has a rich history and a very bright future. Many of the most famous civil engineering educators were part of our Department: people like Hardy Cross, Thomas Shedd, Nathan Newmark, Ralph Peck, Ven Te Chow, and William Hall, to name just a few. The long-term impact on both the academic and professional practice components of our profession have been significant and far-reaching.

We are continuing this tradition, with dynamic and first-rate faculty, staff and students, as well as excellent and expanding facilities. We have enjoyed top ranking in civil engineering for many years, and remain committed to that position of leadership in the profession. We are dedicated to ensuring that our graduates are among the best-educated civil engineers in the world, who will themselves rise to be future leaders of the profession.

Our primary mission is education and research, and the functions of the Department, including this website, are designed around this mission. We hope that the excitement in the Department is reflected in the content of these pages.

I want to draw particular attention to our Civil and Environmental Engineering Alumni Association (CEEAA); to get to the website, click on Alumni Connection. We have more than 10,000 alumni and 4,000 dues-paying members of the CEEAA. Our alumni remain very active, providing support to students through scholarships and our alumni-student mentor program. Being an alumnus of our Department means being a lifelong member of our family. For students, not only will you get the world's best civil engineering education, you will also have the opportunity to maintain lifelong friendships with our faculty and fellow students and alumni.

Please contact me if you are unable to find information that you need (rdodds@uiuc.edu). I will certainly try to answer your question or find someone who can.

If you are a newcomer, we hope that you are able to feel the excitement that we all experience in our association with this Department, and be interested in experiencing it yourself. If you are already connected to us in some way, we do hope that you will feel proud of the ongoing accomplishments of the Department, and support us in our ongoing mission.
