September 1999 fib Published Guidelines for Design by the Strut-and-Tie Method |
| |
In September of 1999, the fédération internationale du béton (fib), published a report on the "Practical guide to the design of structural concrete." This report provides guidance for member design and detailing using the principals of the strut-and-tie method. It is based on the CEB-FIB Model Code 1990 (MC90) along with other CEB and FIP publications. This report can be obtained from http://fib.epfl.ch/publications/fip/sep99/.

October 16, 2000 CAST Design Tool Presented at ACI Conference |
| |
The paper "Advances and Challenges to Design by the Strut-and-Tie Method" by Dan Kuchma and Tjen Tjhin was presented in the open paper session at the Fall Conference of the American Concrete Institute in Toronto, Canada. The presentation provided the audience with an introduction to the Strut-and-Tie Method (STM) as well as an overview of the Computer-Aided Strut-and-Tie (CAST) Design Tool. There were 25 people in attendance.

March 15, 2001 NSF CAREER Award Made for STM Research at UIUC |
| |
In January of 2001, Dan Kuchma received notification that the National Sciences Foundation (NSF) selected his Proposal "Tools and Research to Advance the Use of Strut-and-Tie Models in Education and Design" for funding under NSF’s CAREER Award Program. The starting date for this project was March 15, 2001. The 5-year $375,000 project will focus on three main activities (i) Conducting the experimental research that is necessary to address unresolved issues for the strength, stiffness, and dimensions of struts, ties, and nodal zones, (ii) Continue the development of the Computer-Aided Strut-and-and-Tie (CAST) design tool that is being developed to bring simplicity and transparency to the STM design process, and (iii) To develop educational resources for students, instructors, and practitioners. Further information about this project can be found here.

May 22, 2001 CAST Design Tool Presented at ASCE Structural Congress |
| |
The paper "CAST (Computer Aided Strut-and-Tie) Design Tool" by Tjen Tjhin and Dan Kuchma was presented at Session 54 "Strut-and-Tie Methods for the Design of Structural Concrete" at the 2001 ASCE Structural Congress in Washington D.C. The presentation described the motivation for the development of the CAST design tool, the advantages of a computer-based strut-and-tie approach, as well as an overview of the some of the educational resources that were being developed by the authors. There were about 40 people in attendance.

June 01, 2001 ACI Design Provisions for STM Published in ACI Magazine |
| |
In the June 2001 edition of ACI’s Concrete International Magazine, the proposed changes for the 2002 ACI Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete were published. This included Appendix A on the Strut-and-Tie Method. This was a results of a multiyear efforts by many individuals at ACI, most notably James MacGregor who developed the many versions of these provisions, and ACI Committee 318E, chaired by Jim Wight, who provided valuable input into this process.

July 05, 2001 Alpha Version of CAST Scheduled for Fall Release |
| |
The first version of the CAST design tool was made available for downloading from this website in early 2000. Since that time, this version was replaced with an November 2000 release. Both of these versions were primarily used by students in Dan Kuchma's CEE 364 "Reinforced Concrete Design, II" at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Since November of 2000, many changes and improvement have been made to the CAST design tool to bring it to alevel of maturity that it is ready to be utilized by a much broader audience. This release will be considered the first alpha release of this design tool.
