Associate Professor Larry Fahnestock has received one of the 2017 Dean’s Awards for Excellence in Research. The College of Engineering presents this award annually to the assistant professors and associate professors who have been judged by their colleagues to have conducted the best research during the previous academic year or years.

A CEE Excellence Faculty Fellow, Fahnestock has been on the faculty of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering since 2006. His research interests include earthquake engineering, steel structures, seismic building design, connection behavior, bridge performance under service and extreme loading, progressive collapse mitigation, and large-scale testing of structural components and systems.  At Illinois, he teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in behavior and design of steel structures.

Fahnestock has been recognized with several research honors in addition to the Dean’s Award. He was named a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers’ Structural Engineering Institute in 2017, received the American Institute of Steel Construction Special Achievement Award in 2016, the ASCE Walter L. Huber Civil Engineering Research Prize in 2014, the ASCE Raymond C. Reese Research Prize in 2009, and the American Institute of Steel Construction Faculty Fellowship (2009). He has also received many awards for teaching and advising, including being named to the list of University of Illinois List of Teachers Ranked as Excellent by Their Students every semester since Fall 2006.

The College of Engineering will be honoring Fahnestock and other awardees at the Engineering Faculty Awards Ceremony on April 24, 2017 at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications auditorium with a reception following.
