Applications

The Civil and Environmental Engineering Department would like to request that you access the on-line graduate application.

This web site contains brief instructions regarding the application process and lists the options (with links) for applying on-line. If you are unable to apply on-line and require a paper application, you can print a copy of the application, complete the form, and then mail it to the Office of Admissions (901 W. Illinois Street, Urbana, IL 61801 USA) along with your non-refundable application fee. The application fee for domestic applicants is $40; for international applicants the fee is $50. The University of Illinois does not give application fee waivers.

One advantage to the on-line application is that applicants can pay by credit card (Mastercard or Visa) and the application is available to departments immediately following credit card processing.

If you are unable to access the on-line application, and you also cannot print a copy of the application, then send an email request to Civil and Environmental Engineering ceega@cee.uiuc.edu. Be sure to tell us that you are unable to print the application. Please include your mailing address.

GPA and Test Requirements

Grade Point Average (GPA)
For a full status admission, the Graduate College requires a minimum of 3.0/4.0 (B average).

Graduate Record Examination (GRE)
The department requires that an applicant supply an official record of his/her scores for the GRE administered by:

  Education Testing Service
  P.O. Box 899
Princeton, New Jersey 08540
USA

Testing of English as a Foreign Language (TOFEL)
Applicants whose native language is not English, including those from Puerto Rico, are required by the University to pass the TOEFL. The minimum score allowed by the Graduate College is 550 (213). Scores of 550 to 610 (213-253) indicate the need for further English study. The student is placed on limited status when admitted and required to take the English Placement Test upon arrival at UIUC. The results of the English Placement Test may indicate the need to register for non-credit English courses.

More information about TOEFL requirements and conditions for a TOEFL waiver is available in the Graduate Handbook in section IX Information for International Students.

Arrangements to take the TOEFL test in a foreign country may be made by contacting the Education Testing Service.

The TOEFL must be taken well in advance of the application deadlines if the results are to be received at UIUC on time. The TOEFL must be taken within two years of the proposed term of entry. Older scores are no longer valid and official score reports are not produced for tests that were taken more than two years ago.

Have ETS send your GRE/TOEFL scores to UIUC. The UIUC code for GRE/TOEFL scores is: 1836.

The number of graduate students is limited in the department and not all applicants meeting the minimum requirements can be admitted.

International Applications

International applicants that are sending all support documents in one package: Each letter of reference should be in an envelope that has been sealed by the person providing the reference. Each transcript should be in an envelope that was sealed by the educational institute. You can place all of the sealed, official envelopes in a larger envelope with your statement of purpose, resume, part B of your application, and your financial documents. These should be sent to Civil & Environmental Engineering.

Declaration and Certification of Finances
To be considered for admission, applicants from other countries must submit proof of adequate finances for the length of time they plan to study on this campus. You are required to submit current evidence (dated within 6 months) that you will have at least $34,966 per year for the duration of your studies. Applicants who do not provide satisfactory evidence of adequate finances will not be granted admission. International applicants must submit a Declaration and Certification of Finances form. This form includes a description of the estimated expenses and required procedure for verification of cash currently available and transferable.

The following are some guidelines for financial verification
The Declaration form must be signed by the person financing the student’s program.
The Declaration form must indicate sponsorship for the same length of time that the CEE Department uses when requesting admission. For the Master's program this is 2 years; for the Doctoral Program this is 5 years.
The bank account holder must be the person who signed the sponsor section on the Declaration and Certification of Finances form.
Official bank statements must be on official bank letterhead – a copy is NOT acceptable.
Bank statements must be dated within 1 year of the student's admission by OAR.
Bank statements must be in English or include an English translation.
Checking or savings account balances are acceptable.

Certificates of Deposit (CDs) are acceptable but must mature by September 15th for the fall term of entry.

Mutual funds are not acceptable!  We cannot accept faxed or emailed financial forms.

Financial Aid

Graduate applications include a section for applicants to indicate if they would like to be considered for financial aid and their order of preference for the kind of financial aid they would like to receive. This is the only application for financial aid that is available.

With regard to financial aid, the number of applicants far exceeds the amount of funding that we have available. Only the most talented applicants who match the research needs of our professors receive financial aid. The selection process is difficult and we are able to give financial aid to only a small number of applicants.

The CEE Graduate Handbook has more information about financial aid (page 13).

Request for Application Status

CEE will use the email address that you provide on your graduate application to keep in contact with you about your application status. Please note that CEE does not use the message option that is provided with the on-line application

The CEE Admissions Office will inform you of receipt of your application and will let you know which support documents have been received at that time and which documents may still be missing. When your application file is complete and ready to be sent to your area of specialization for evaluation, you will receive an email. As soon as a recommendation on your application is received, CEE will send you another email.

Please be assured that we are processing your application as quickly as possible. We receive a large number of applications and the time we spend checking application status delays the processing of your application. Also, because we receive such a large volume of mail, we are not able to automatically confirm receipt of each mail item as it is received.

If the contact information on your application changes, please send an email message to mpeyton@uiuc.edu.
