The Soil Mechanics Laboratory of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Illinois has a long history of excellence in experimental  research. Over the years, it has greatly contributed to the state-of-the-art in geotechnical engineering.

Harry Schnabel Jr, Large Soil Model Test Laboratory

The 3,200 square foot Henry J. Schnabel Laboratory has been part of extensive research at the University of Illinois during the last decade on the behavior and performance of excavations. Some studies included,  Collection of field observations,  testing of excavation walls adjacent to building walls, Numerical analysis and workshops to develop guidelines for practive.
