WELCOME TO THE Railroad Engineering Homepage For over a century the University of Illinois has been a leader in railroad engineering research and education. Beginning with Talbot's fundamental work on railroad track design, and Schmidt & Tuthill's work on train energy and power requirements, through Hay's textbook on railroad engineering, The U of I has a distinguished record of accomplishment and remains highly respected by today's railroad engineering community. As we enter the next century, the tradition of excellence in railroad engineering continues at the U of I. Nearly two dozen researchers are investigating a wide range of questions and applying cutting edge technology to help North American railroads develop solutions to meet the challenges of more efficient, reliable, faster, and profitable operations. Railroads today are transporting more freight than ever in their history, and more than any other transport mode. Meanwhile the nation is poised to begin developing high-speed rail corridors throughout the country, including Illinois. Railroads, and the engineering firms that supply the industry, need talented young engineers to develop and implement the advanced technology that railroads will need in the 21st century.
