WELCOME TO THE
Railroad Engineering Homepage

For over a century the University of Illinois has been a leader in railway engineering research and education. Beginning with Talbot's fundamental work on railroad track design, and Schmidt & Tuthill's work on train energy and power requirements, through Hay's textbook on railroad engineering, The U of I has a distinguished record of accomplishment and remains highly respected by today's railroad engineering community.

As we enter the next century, the tradition of excellence in railroad engineering continues at the U of I. Nearly two dozen researchers are investigating a wide range of questions and applying cutting edge technology to help North American railways develop solutions to meet the challenges of more efficient, reliable, faster, and profitable operations. 2008 Railroad Engineering Education Symposium
To foster the growth of rail engineering education within universities, the AREMA Foundation and AREMA Committee 24 - Education and Training, is organizing an event called the Railway Engineering Education Symposium. The goal of the event is to provide engineering professors with rail curriculum to take back to the classroom. The professor symposium will be held from June 8-11, 2008, at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The symposium will include two days of discussion on railroad engineering materials, current and future research, and provide one day for a visit to local railroad facilities.

Engineering Open House - March 7-8, 2008
Engineering Open House (EOH) is an annual event organized entirely by engineering students at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.  It is held each spring semester, and draws estimated crowds of 20,000 people including, students, teachers, parents and families, from all over Illinois (and beyond). The Railroad Engineering Program participates in EOH each year by working with major railroads who to set up various exhibits and displays of railroad technology.
