The Department of Civil Engineering at UIUC is located in the Newmark Civil Engineering Laboratory. This facility has 118,000 sq. ft. of office, classroom and laboratory space and includes 10,000 sq. ft. of shop area for fabrication of specialized research equipment. This Department has a long tradition in the use of computers for solving Civil Engineering problems. A major commitment of departmental resources has been made to provide a wide spectrum of computational resources for research and teaching. The principal departmental facilities include:
- Microcomputer instructional facility.
- General personal computer support.
- An ethernet system within Newmark connects to the campus 80 Mbs fiber optic network.
- COE Computational Laboratory for structural behavior and modeling of airport pavement systems and other projects.
- COE World Wide Web Server

The Advanced Transportation Research and Engineering Laboratory (ATREL) facility includes 50,000 sq. ft. of building space and 56 acres or property. The main facility is 19,000 sq. ft. and provides office space for faculty members, student research assistants, and visiting professionals and educators. It has a library which houses copies of UIUC's transportation research literature and two large classrooms which can be partitioned into five smaller classrooms.
In addition to the offices, library and classrooms the main facility includes three research laboratories and a high bay area that provides considerable space for large-scale testing and research. ATREL's surrounding acreage allows research on full-scale pavement and rail systems under controlled experimental conditions.
